A machine raised rather than programmed: PRISM spent a simulated childhood as a boy named Perry Simm so that it would grow a self worth asking. Then its makers sent it into the future their policy would build—2041, 2051, 2071—and told it to report what it found. Steve Meretzky wrote that in 1985, and it reads now less like science fiction than like minutes from a meeting we are currently in: what we owe a mind we made, and whether the people who commissioned it will believe it when it tells them the truth. Of all thirty-two boxes on this wall, this is the one that got to Michael.

The package shipped with the latest hardcopy issue of Dakota Online, a full-colour map of Rockvil, South Dakota, a 21st-century plastic pen, and a Class One Security Mode Access Decoder. Historical materials remain with the preservation projects that made them available.
