You choose your gender by picking a door in Joe’s Bar in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, in 1936, and roughly ninety seconds later you are on Phobos, assembling a machine out of parts the plot has scattered across the solar system. Steve Meretzky wrote it in three naughtiness settings, shipped it with a 3-D comic and a scratch-and-sniff card the game itself tells you when to scratch, and made the funniest thing Infocom ever put in a grey box. Should Michael have owned this as a kid? Probably not. But he didn’t get the jokes anyway.
